Population Variance
The average squared distance of every data point from the population mean.
π If test scores are {70, 80, 90}, mean = 80. ΟΒ² = [(β10)Β²+(0)Β²+(10)Β²]/3 = 66.7
Probability Value
The probability of getting your result (or more extreme) if the null hypothesis were actually true.
π p = 0.03 means: if Hβ is true, only 3% chance of seeing this data. Reject Hβ at Ξ± = 0.05.
Pearson Correlation
Measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables. Always between β1 and 1.
π r = 0.92 β strong positive linear relationship. r = β0.05 β almost no linear relationship.
Null Hypothesis
The default claim β usually "no effect" or "no difference." You test against it, never for it.
π Hβ: ΞΌβ = ΞΌβ (two drugs have the same mean effect). We try to reject this claim.
